Mentorship

Mentoring requirements for an Pro-EFW certification candidate:

The candidate must receive 10 hours of mentoring during their certification process.  A minimum of 4 of the 10 mentorship hours must be with their Pro-EFW Trainer.  The Pro-EFW Trainer will determine the exact number and nature of the mentoring hours with each candidate individually depending on their needs.

At the request of the certification candidate or at the discretion of the Pro-EFW Trainer, more than ten mentoring hours may be required to meet certification requirements.  If there are any questions or concerns regarding mentoring hours they can be brought to the Pro-EFW Certification Committee.

Mentorship hours provide certification candidates the opportunity to incorporate EFW into their practice while benefiting from the guidance and expertise of individuals with extensive experience related to EFW, equines, mental health and/or learning. The mentorship process allows candidates to address a wide range of subjects with their mentors such as EFW approaches, case plans, session notes, challenging clients, equine care, continuing educations etc.

The candidate is responsible for initiating a mentorship arrangement either with a mentor with diverse areas of expertise, or with a team of mentors who collectively meet the candidate's scope of practice requirements. For example, you may have a mentor with mental health experience, another with equine experience, and yet another with EFW experience.

*NB: The candidate must receive 10 hours of mentoring from an Pro-EFW Trainer or Mentor during their certification process. Your Pro-EFW Trainer and Pro-EFW will be in touch with each other to discuss your progress and Scope of Practice.  If there are any questions or concerns regarding mentoring hours they can be brought to the Pro-EFW Certification Committee.

Please note that your Pro-EFW mentor does not have to be present during sessions; mentorship hours with your EFW-CAN mentor may be completed in person, by phone, Skype or video conference and can be supported with email contact.

Mentorship Cost

Trainers and/or Mentors charge an hourly fee for the ten mentorship hours.  Each Trainer/Mentor sets their own fee, please confirm this cost with your Trainer/Mentor.

Who Can Be a Mentor?

Mentors fall into two basic categories:

1)         Pro-EFW -certified mentors have met the rigorous certification requirements for the Advanced Pro-EFW Professional and are certified as Mental Health Professionals (MHPs), Equine Facilitated Learning Professionals (EFLPs) or Equine Professionals (EPs), or they may be dual or tri-certified.

2)         Peer mentors are individuals who are working in a field that supports and enhances the learning and practice of the candidate (for example a psychologist, social worker, teacher, riding instructor etc.). When working with mentors who are not Pro-EFW-certified, candidates are responsible for educating them about Pro-EFW’s principles, ethics and scope of practice requirements.  Peer mentors may also be other Pro-EFW certification candidates with whom you are working or practicing who will act in a supportive role.

EFW-CAN MENTORS:
 The role of the Pro-EFW mentor is to:
  1. Guide the Pro-EFW Candidate ("the mentee") through the Pro-EFW training and certification process;
  2. Provide the mentee with case consultation and support; and
  3. Supervise the mentee's internship hours.

All potential mentors must:
  1. Be fully certified by Pro-EFW in the area/s in which they would like to provide mentorship or a mentor with similar qualifications and experience;
  2. Show a minimum of 1,000 hours of active EFW practice or related applicable practice and understand the Pro-EFW approach, ethics and principles to guide the candidate in their area of training and education as an Equine Professional, Equine Facilitated Learning Professional or Mental Health Professional;
  3. Be able to show prior experience and/ or training in the supervision or mentoring of other professionals;
  4. Have a Scope of Practice that encompasses that of the mentee in the areas mentorship is being sought.
  5. The role of the mentee is to work with a team of mentors who together meet the mentee's scope of practice requirements.  For example, they may have one mentor on the equine side, one on the mental health or learning side and one to guide them through the Pro-EFW process.  The mentee is responsible to educate their non-Pro-EFW Certified Mentors in the principles, ethics and scope of practice requirements of Pro-EFW.
Please download and use the two downloadable Mentorship Forms PDF document provided to log your mentorship hours. Once completed, these documents can be sent to your mentor for signature prior to submitting with your final review.

Ten (10) hours of mentorship with a Pro-EFW mentor includes three (3) components:

  1. One hour of mentorship with an Pro-EFW trainer/mentor before you attend Focus training part 2
  2. Two hours of mentorship with an Pro-EFW trainer/mentor before you attend Integration Week.
  3. Four Session Evaluations:  A Pro-EFW trainer/mentor will review, discuss and approve four (4) EFW Session Evaluations which you have prepared for this portion of your certification requirement. There is a separate form for the mentorship hours regarding sessions evaluation as they must be completed with a Pro-EFW mentor/trainer.
  4. Any of the remaining 10 mentorship hours with a Pro-EFW trainer/mentor will be for additional session evaluations, case consultations, discussing difficult clients and/or reviewing your Scope of Practice.

Session Evaluations

Four session evaluations must be submitted to a Pro-EFW Mentor to complete the requirement of mentorship and supervision.  Your Pro-EFW Mentor will review the session forms and discuss them with you in person, by phone, Skype or video conference and can be supported with email contact.  The Certification candidate and the Mentor will come to agreement on the cost of this supervision depending on the number of hours.

Provide brief summaries of four (4) EFW sessions with clients.
  • The sessions may be for individuals or groups and can be a succession of sessions with the same client(s) or a variety of sessions.
  •  Respect client confidentiality and complete these summaries in accordance with relevant professional guidelines.
  • For each of the 4 sessions, please include an evaluation of how the session went how you would change it if necessary, and a plan for the next session.
  • Sessions are to be documented  in the following form that will be given to your mentor and discussed during your mentoring hours.
